I am a sucker for this kind of book. I love the jerky hero, strong sassy heroine, jealousy, other women, lots of misunderstandings, angst, great grovels and this book had it all. Beautifully written with a very touching story, it grabbed me right away.
This time period for historical romance isn't always a favorite of mine because they tend to not have the strong alpha hero, but more high society rakes. Well yes, Michael was the high society rake, but I just loved his arrogance and assholeness....more

Pirate girl routs the Devil of Darfield!
This book started out so very delightfully and I was intrigued from the word go.
It has a heart-achy angst caused by a forced moc between a really sweet and besotted h who travels across oceans (and years) holding a torch for a childhood crush, and a resentful cruel H who only remembers a bratty hellion and wants nothing to do with her. By some highly convoluted machinations engendered by her father, the H is bound by a contract to marry the h, and she was...more

I'm not a big fan of the 'big misunderstanding' plotline or a cheating hero because of the big misunderstanding plotline. However, The Devil's Love is well written story with a likable heroine and a wonderfully groveling hero, and because of that, this book worked for me.

Another romance novel that's not worth reading past the first love scene. I just can't keep going with a book that refers to the guy's penis as 'his passion.'

This is the author's first book, as well as the first book of hers that I have read. I certainly plan to read her later books, as this book showed tremendous promise. I thought that the first of the book was a solid four stars - pretty good for a debut - but the book fell apart for me after that, and I would give the final one star.

Little Abby was funny and fierce but her grown up version is the classic spineless and weak heroine that recently annoys me to no end.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr >_<
Michael is what a rake is supposed to be like but I couldn't get passed the fact he actually has sexual intercourse with his mistress while he's already married to Abby.
Even if the marriage was yet to be consumated I just didn't feel comfortable with a 'hero' that cheats then, right after 'the deed', coldly dumps his mistress and runs back h...more

This book began with the hero and heroine as children with varying opinions of each other. The heroine, Abbey grows up loving Michael and thinking that he too loves her. Other the other hand, Micheal holds a very negative opinion of Abbey and had forgotten all about her, until he is forced to marry Abbey to cancel his family's debts. Their reunion happens to be a shocking revelation to both and here starts the snowball of angst. I actually really enjoyed the beginning. Abbey's response to Michea...more

After having read many historical novels, I'm sad to say that this book would probably fall along the forgettable category as nothing is extraordinary about the story .. But despite of it, I was still looking forward to reading how devil the hero is, and with that title, I was assuming he was an ultimate jerk. Sadly, he was not. So naturally, I was disappointed. No tug of the heart, no stirring of my emotions... Nothing.

This book left me with a huge headache. Too much freaking drama and nowhere near as much emotion as it should have.
The heroine is tricked by her own father, travels thousands of miles to marry a guy she thinks is stupidly in love with her and whom she's stupidly in love with, is humiliated and treated like crap by the hero, ends up softening his heart, just to be humiliated and treated like crap once again.
After all this, I don't understand why she would be willing to forgive the hero. I certain...more

I just did a reread of this book (that I read 10 years ago) and I have to wonder what I was thinking giving it 4 stars! I could almost get past some of the beginning, but then it happened again and I was just ugh! I finished because I wanted to see what I liked so much. It had a fairly good ending, but I just wasn't feeling most of this book.
I love Julia London, but this book will not be read by me again :(
And for my safety gang- Not safe! Just trust me and skip this one :/

'No reason why he's so callous & mean. I don't really identify w/ either main character.

The Devil's Love was the first Julia London book I've read. I wish I read her work earlier because I enjoyed this novel so much. For me, the first half was 5 star worthy. The opening is one of the cutest ones I've read. I like that they knew each other when they were younger. Then when they met up again and the misunderstanding about the will of Abbey's father was pretty hilarious. The sparring was so entertaining. Abbey and Michael truly delivered in that aspect, I couldn't quit smiling. Their...more

Abbey and Michael knew each other when they were younger. He didn't care for this little 'hellion' back then. Years pass without seeing each other. Throughout these years, Abbey's father fabricated a betrothal between Michael & Abbey. She lives these years believing this and loving the persona of a man her father created. My first try of this author, and probably my last.
I don't mind recycled/formula romance plots, provided that the author can breathe new life into them. But that didn't happen here. I kept checking the percentages on my Kindle to see how much closer I was to being done with it.

About a year ago I started reading Julia London, specifically The Highland Grooms. I find between books in this series, I want more from this author, so I chose an earlier release of hers from 2009, “The Devil’s Love”. Omg, I couldn’t get enough of this story. Immediately loved the beautiful, strong-willed heroine, Abbey, and though for awhile it was hard to warm to Michael (which I eventually did), it was an enjoyable process watching her win his heart. Good conflicts and trust issues. Drama. But the story started a little too slow, and the audible narrator Anne Flosnik was terrible. Her v/f letters sounded like b, for example the word ’wife’ sounded ’wibe’ and ’herself’ like ’herselb’.

A bad situation viewed from two very different points and people.
I liked Michael and found his reactions understandable, considering the situation he finds himself in. While I liked Abbey for the biggest part of the book, her behavior after the duel confused me. Ahhhh! After reading a couple otherwise very compelling books that nevertheless made my teeth grind because they hit on all my romance pet peeves, finally a refreshing change! (view spoiler)[ Hero is still an alpha-jerk, walks all over the heroine, but at least in this one she doesn't just throw herself at him two seconds after he's ground her face in the mud. While I liked this book, I felt like it was 100 pages too long, especially where they each do stupid things to make the other one unhappy and then try to woo each other back. A Love Story to the Core
I tend to read the lowest review ratings first before purchasing a book. I oftentimes stop at the three star reviews and make a decision to buy or not. Do I like heroes who dally with their mistress after their marriage vows (even if the marriage was a forced one at the beginning and no physical/sexual commitment has been established and it was a one time encounter to end it)? No, I don’t. Do I like the insultingly arrogant/ jerk / faithless type of hero? Not really. Does...more

On the outset I was intrigued by this book. The writing was... awkward, but it being a debut novel (I believe) I was willing to be forgiving. But 30% in I just couldn't take it anymore. 5 stars even though the hero was a jerk at first. I loved how the author used the theme of 'waiting' through out the whole story. The heroine in the beginning assumed the hero had been waiting for her (he was not), then for the rest of the first half the heroine waits for the hero, the last half of the book it is the hero who waits for the heroine. Swoon! Though trust me Julia London wrote the waiting part more eloquently than I did. I also feel the need to trigger warn people about:(view spoile...more
